The Spanish Navy oceanographic research ship ‘Hespérides’ will be heading towards the Antarctica next Friday 24thto take part in the 23rd Spanish Antarctic Campaign.

A total of 230 people will rotate and participate in this year’s campaign. Up to 122 technicians and scientists will conduct 16 research projects (seismic, geological, hydrographic, biological) including data collecting activities to monitor climate change parameters.

The ‘Hespérides’ is scheduled to arrive at the Antarctica on December 16th, returning to Cartagena on May 25th 2018. In addition to being the platform for most of the scientific research projects, the ship will also provide support to the Spanish bases in that continent: ‘Gabriel de Castilla’ and ‘Juan Carlos I’.

The ‘Hespérides’ is the only Spanish oceanographic ship designed to conduct multidisciplinary scientific research activities in all seas or oceans of the world. Her crew consists of 60 people under command of Cdr. Aurelio Fernández Dapena, and can accommodate up to 37 technicians and scientists.

The Antarctic Campaign is a model of cooperation between different public and private R&D institutions working in the State Plan for Scientific and Technical Innovation.
