The amphibious assault ship ‘Galicia’ set sail from Rota Naval Base to take part, as flagship, in the European Union counter-piracy Operation ‘Atalanta’ in the Indian Ocean under command of Spanish Navy Rear-Admiral Rafael Fernández-Pintado and his Staff.
The ‘Galicia’ (L-51) will deploy for six months. This is the fourth time sheparticipates in this operation and the second as command ship.
For this mission, the ship has embarked two SH-3D helicopters and four remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) as well as a Marine Corps Special Operations Team.
Operation ‘Atalanta’ was set up by the European Union on December 8th2008 to fight piracy in the Gulf of Aden and Somalia, reinforce maritime security and protect World Food Program (WFP) ships.
