Purpose of the mission

The offshore patrol boat ‘Arnomendi’ will deploy as part of the 2019 surveillance agreement between the Fisheries General Secretariat and the Spanish Navy.

In this deployment the OPV ‘Arnomendi’ will operate in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.

The 90-day mission is divided into four different campaigns where the ship’s crew will work hand-in-hand with members of SEGEPESCA (Fisheries General Secretariat) and EFCA (European Fisheries Control Agency).

The first campaign organized by NEAFC (North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission) will take place south off Iceland’s EEZ; the second in the Sole Bank but this time within the EEZ of the nations concerned (Ireland, France and Great Britain), but always outside territorial waters.

The third campaign, after crossing the Strait of Gibraltar, will be conducted in the eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula to monitor the fattening farms of the bluefin tuna.

The fourth and last campaign will take place in the Cantabrian sea providing support to our fishing fleet and monitoring the migration of the albacore.

This deployment contributes to the sustainable development of a national economic activity of first level, and to do so, we watch over the interests of our fleet and that of Europe’s, responsibly preserving the future of the coming generations.
