Exercise Spanish MINEX-19 – ESP MINEX-19

From April 29th to May 10th the international exercise SPANISH MINEX-19 (ESP MINEX-19) will take place in the Balearic Islands with participation of 16 surface ships, 1 submarine, Spanish Air Force and Navy aircraft, with up to 900 participants. It is a multinational advanced mine warfare exercise which the Spanish Navy organizes every year in the Mediterranean Sea.

Captain Rafael Arcos will command the multinational naval force made up of EUROMARFOR units and MCM vessels from the Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group Two (SNMCMG-2). He will direct the operations, along with his Staff and observers from 8 nations from the OPV ‘Tornado’.

The rendezvous of all participating units will take place in the port of Mahon. The MCM Naval Force has modern detection systems and specialized EOD divers. The minehunters also operate state-of-the-art remotely piloted submarines for reconnaissance and mine disposal missions.

An Open Day is scheduled for Sunday 28th when several naval units will open for visitors; among them, the offshore patrol boat ‘Tornado’, flagship of ESP MINEX-19 and other Spanish Navy minehunters. The activation of the EUROMARFOR Group will take place on board the Portuguese Navy ship ‘Figueira da Foz’ and the flotilla will then proceed towards the Exercise area.
