Frigate ‘Navarra’ (F-85) in Operation ‘Atalanta’

Purpose of the mission

Frigate ‘Navarra’ in Operation ‘Atalanta’.

Frigate ‘Navarra’ (F-85) -under command of Cdr. Eduardo Guitián- will participate in Operation ‘Atalanta’ during the next 5 months as flagship of the European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR), accommodating the Force Commander and his Staff, on this occasion Spanish Rear admiral Ricardo A. Hernández López.

The ship’s capabilities have been enhanced with an SH-60B helicopter and a Marine Corps’ Special Naval Warfare Team totaling a complement of 226 people.

Operation ‘Atalanta’

Started in 2008, Operation ‘Atalanta’ contributes to enhance maritime security in the Indian Ocean with surveillance missions intended to thwart pirate attacks on the one hand and, on the other, monitor fishing activities collaborating with other international organizations operating in the area. Spain has participated since the very beginning in this operation providing naval units and aircraft.

The deployment of the ‘Navarra’ is a clear example of Spain’s commitment with this EU-led counter-piracy operation in the Indian Ocean, entrusted with the protection of vulnerable shipping in the area, especially WFP (World Food Program) and AMISOM (African Union Mission in Somalia) ships.
