LHD ‘Juan Carlos I’ and frigate ‘Blas de Lezo’ left Rota Naval Base towards Kuwait to conduct a strategic projection of Army helicopters. The LHD embarked three Chinooks HT-17 and two Cougars HT-27 which will deploy in the Iraqi base of Camp Taji and integrate with other US Army units in Operation ‘Inherent Resolve’. The frigate will provide escort to the LHD.

The commitment of Spain with this mission is undeniable, offering warships and aircraft for this international operation. Apart from her own crew (282), the ‘Juan Carlos I’ embarked 95 servicemen for the air units (4 AV-8B Harrier and 2 SH-3D helicopters), in addition to a 20-strong landing group and 2 LCM boats. The crew of the ‘Blas de Lezo’ consists of 194 people, plus a Marine Corps security team.

This mission is under the operational command of the Spanish Chief of the Defense Staff (JEMAD). It is intended to show the capability of the Spanish Armed Forces to project combat elements in faraway scenarios in conflict and to contribute to the defense of world security.

On the other hand, the scheduled ports of call in Bombay (India) and Alexandria (Egypt) during their transit back to Spain will also contribute to show excellent products of our national industry.
