BALTOPS-19 – LHD ‘Juan Carlos I’ (L-61)

Purpose of the mission

The main purpose of exercise BALTOPS-19 is to enhance training and interoperate with other participating units in the planning and conduction of maritime operations with a special emphasis on amphibious and air operations, as well as anti-submarine and anti-surface drills.

For this deployment, LHD ‘Juan Carlos I’ has embarked 900 servicemen in addition to her own crew of around 300 people. The landing force is made up of 306 marines and 38 vehicles and LCM-1E craft. Embarked aircraft include: 7 SVTOL AV-8B ‘Harrier’ and 3 SH-3D ‘Seaking’.

With this activity, the Spanish presence in Atlantic, Baltic, and North Seas waters contributes to deterrence along with other NATO and allied nations.

The following port calls have been scheduled: Kiel (Germany), Bruges (Belgium) and Vigo (Spain).

Joint exercises to boost interoperability will also be organized with different naval groups from riparian countries.
