Purpose of the mission

Next September 1st the auxiliary oiler and replenishment ship (AOR) ‘Cantabria’ will relieve F-80 frigate ‘Victoria’ in Operation ‘Sophia’, a missiondesigned to save lives at sea and thwart human trafficking networks operating in the central Mediterranean Sea. The ship will embark a recently upgraded AB-212 helicopter, medical personnel and a Marine Corps Security team. Additionally, the ‘Cantabria’ will provide logistic support to other European naval units patrolling the designated area, as well as NATO warships participating in Operation ‘Sea Guardian’.

The Italian Navy ship ‘San Giusto’ will be relieved by the ‘Cantabria’ as flagship of the operation and Force Headquarters (FHQ), this time under command of Spanish Rear-admiral Javier Moreno Susanna and his Staff. 

Since the beginning of this EU operation in July 2015, the participating naval units have contributed to the arrest of more than 100 alleged human traffickers and saved the lives of more than 40,000 people including many women and children of all ages.
